ABOUT THIS WINE
The A Merced Mencía 2021 is a single-vineyard wine from the El Canto vineyard in Bierzo, Spain, produced by Michelini i Mufatto. The vineyard is characterized by its 80-year-old Mencía vines, situated at an altitude of 600 meters on soils composed of slate and quartz. The Michelini i Mufatto family, comprising Gerardo Michelini, Andrea Mufatto, and their son Manuel, founded their winery with a philosophy centered on purity, precision, and respect for terroir. They apply this approach across their vineyards in Argentina, Spain, and Uruguay, prioritizing old vines and traditional winemaking techniques to reveal the unique essence of each location. The 2021 vintage in Bierzo experienced cooler conditions, influencing the wine's character with increased freshness and a refined structure.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The A Merced Mencía is produced using grapes from the El Canto vineyard. The winemaking process involves foot-trodden grapes, with fermentation taking place in 1,000-liter oak casks using native yeasts. The fermentation includes 50% whole clusters and 50% destemmed grapes, with gentle maceration techniques employed. The wine undergoes an extended maceration period in contact with the pomace and pulp, while pressing and pumping over are avoided. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for one year in used 225-liter French oak barrels. The Michelini i Mufatto family practices organic viticulture and dry-farming in their vineyards.
