ABOUT THIS WINE
Siblings Alberto and Caterina Burzi are among the most celebrated up-and-coming producers in Piedmont. While their family has grown grapes in La Morra for generations, they are the very first to estate-bottle under their own name. Their grandparents, Luigi Roggero and Maddalena Oberto, were hard-working postwar farmers who farmed hazelnuts and grapes. Because times were difficult, they sold their grapes to cooperatives or leased their vineyards to prestigious producers—such as renting their 90-year-old Capalot parcel to the legendary modernist Roberto Voerzio until 2011. In 2012, at just 26 years old, Alberto completed his oenology studies, reclaimed the family vineyards, and started estate-bottling. Caterina joined him in 2018 to manage sales and communication. Alberto has built a cult following for mastering 'The Third Way'—a synthesis between the historically opposed modern and traditional schools of Barolo, combining traditionalist extended skin maceration and large, neutral oak botte aging with a modernist’s focus on pristine fruit preservation, vibrant energy, and organic viticulture.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process at Burzi is designed to let the pure, native fruit shine. Fermentation begins spontaneously using wild, native yeasts (pied de cuve) in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This is followed by an extended skin contact maceration lasting 25 to 30 days with regular, gentle manual pumping over to extract fine-grained tannins. The wine is then aged in large Austrian oak casks (botte grande of 60 Hl) sourced from the prestigious Austrian cooperage Stockinger. These casks are customized with steam treatment instead of standard fire toasting to guarantee minimal oak extraction. The final months before bottling (up to 12 months) are spent in custom-built concrete tanks to naturally harmonize and balance the structures.
