ABOUT THIS WINE
The Craven Pinot Gris is a skin-contact wine, presenting as a rosé or light red, a distinctive approach for the Pinot Gris grape. Its color and flavor are derived from fermenting the dark-skinned grape varietal with its skins. The wine originates from the Newlands Vineyard in Stellenbosch, South Africa, a site characterized by iron-rich koffeklip soils. Craven Wines, established by Mick and Jeanine Craven, is dedicated to producing single-vineyard, single-varietal wines with a philosophy of minimal intervention, purity, and balance. The 2022 vintage is notable for being the first to undergo fermentation and aging exclusively in concrete tanks, a technique intended to refine the wine's structure.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The Craven Pinot Gris is produced using a skin-contact method, where destemmed grapes ferment with their skins for 6-7 days to capture color and flavor. The 2022 vintage saw the wine fermented and aged entirely in concrete tanks for 5-6 months, a technique chosen to enhance tightness and structure. Minimal intervention is a core principle, with viticulture practices avoiding pesticides and herbicides. The grapes are sourced from the Newlands Vineyard in Stellenbosch, which features heavy iron-rich koffeklip soils. Gentle extraction is achieved through daily light pump-overs during fermentation.
