ABOUT THIS WINE
El Coto Blanco is a white wine from the Rioja DOCa in Spain, produced by El Coto de Rioja. The 2023 vintage is crafted from a blend predominantly featuring Viura, with contributions from Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc. A key aspect of its origin is the sourcing of grapes from El Coto's Finca Carbonera vineyard, recognized as the highest vineyard in Rioja, situated between 840 and 900 meters above sea level. This high altitude is instrumental in the slow ripening of the grapes, contributing to balanced flavors and vibrant acidity. El Coto de Rioja, established in 1970, emphasizes vineyard control through its substantial land ownership across Rioja, aiming to deliver quality wines at accessible price points. The winery has also explored incorporating varieties like Verdejo, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, particularly suited to the conditions of their high-altitude estates.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for El Coto Blanco begins with chilling the grapes upon arrival at the winery. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at low temperatures, generally between 14-18°C, a technique chosen to preserve the wine's aromatic profile and freshness. The wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation or oak aging, with its maturation taking place in stainless steel. Grapes are sourced from El Coto's vineyards, with specific mention of the high-altitude Finca Carbonera vineyard. Sustainable viticulture practices are part of the winery's approach. The producer has also incorporated newer grape varieties into their white wine production, particularly in their high-altitude sites.
