ABOUT THIS WINE
The Filara Nerello Mascalese 2017 from Cantine Nicosia is a red wine from Sicily, Italy, crafted from the Nerello Mascalese grape. Its unique character is shaped by its origin in high-altitude vineyards situated on mineral-rich volcanic soils. Cantine Nicosia, a family-owned winery founded in 1898 on the slopes of Mount Etna, brings a legacy of dedication to Sicilian viticulture. The 2017 vintage benefited from a warm, dry season that promoted grape ripeness while diurnal temperature shifts preserved acidity, contributing to the wine's structure.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for Filara Nerello Mascalese begins with a cold maceration of the grapes for 24 hours, followed by fermentation in contact with the skins for approximately three weeks. This extended maceration is key to extracting desired compounds. The wine is then aged for 24 months in second and third-passage French oak barriques, followed by a minimum of 12 months of bottle aging. Grapes are hand-harvested in crates during late October to ensure quality.
