ABOUT THIS WINE
The Mullineux Iron Syrah 2020 is a single-vineyard wine from Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, located in the Swartland region of South Africa. Crafted from 100% Syrah grapes, it originates from a specific parcel of dry-land, organically farmed bush vines situated on iron-rich 'koffieklip' soils west of Malmesbury. This terroir is known for contributing to the wine's broadness and mid-palate concentration. The winery, established in 2007 by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, is dedicated to producing authentic Swartland wines that express their terroir, emphasizing sustainable farming and minimalist winemaking. The 'Iron' Syrah is part of their 'Single Terroir' series, which focuses on wines from specific soil types.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The Mullineux Iron Syrah 2020 is produced using a hands-on approach. Grapes are foot-trodden in 500-liter French oak barrels, and fermentation is initiated by indigenous yeasts. The winemaking process includes extended skin maceration, lasting up to four weeks, with daily pigeage (punching down the cap) to ensure optimal extraction. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 21 months in French oak barrels, with a portion being new. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation and a further period of maturation in barrel and bottle before its release.
