ABOUT THIS WINE
Koonunga Hill is a cornerstone of the Penfolds portfolio, first released with the 1976 vintage. Named after a historic vineyard in the Barossa Valley purchased by Penfolds in 1971, this range represents the winery's legendary multi-regional blending philosophy. Established in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold, the estate has long championed the art of blending across regions to bypass localized weather volatility and secure the finest fruit. This approach ensures a consistent, robust 'House Style' that offers exceptional quality-to-price ratio and surprising cellarability for an entry-level wine.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The 2017 vintage of Koonunga Hill Shiraz was crafted using fruit sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia. Following a cool growing season with high winter rainfall, the grapes enjoyed extended hang-time, resulting in excellent aromatic development. After harvest, the grapes underwent traditional fermentation in stainless steel before being matured for several months in a combination of seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. This seasoned oak maturation is carefully managed to preserve the vibrant primary fruit characteristics of the Shiraz grape while adding subtle structural complexity.
