ABOUT THIS WINE
Marañones Picarana, now officially known as Marañones Albillo Real from the 2022 vintage, is a barrel-aged white wine from Bodega Marañones, located in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, Sierra de Gredos, Spain. Produced under the D.O. Vinos de Madrid, this 100% Albillo Real wine hails from old vines (30-70 years) planted at high altitudes (650-850m) on unique granitic and sandy soils. Bodega Marañones, part of the Alma Carraovejas group, was founded in 2008 with a philosophy centered on respecting the land through organic and biodynamic farming. The wine's name, 'Picarana', is a tribute to a local wild bird. This wine is recognized as a benchmark for Gredos whites, showcasing the exceptional potential of the Albillo Real grape.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for Marañones Picarana begins with hand-harvested grapes from old vines. Whole clusters are gently pressed, and fermentation is initiated spontaneously with native yeasts in a variety of vessels, including used French oak barrels of different sizes (228L to 700L) and large oak foudres (1,200L and 1,500L), as well as stainless steel tanks. Following fermentation, the wine rests on its lees for 10 months in the same vessels, allowing for texture and complexity to develop. The winery adheres to organic and biodynamic farming principles, emphasizing minimal intervention to showcase the unique terroir of the high-altitude granitic vineyards.
