ABOUT THIS WINE
The Meerlust Red is a Bordeaux-style blend from Stellenbosch, South Africa, produced by Meerlust Estate. The wine's journey began as a declassification of the estate's premium Rubicon wine, but its quality and popularity led to its establishment as a permanent offering. The name 'Meerlust' translates to 'pleasure of the sea,' a nod to its location near False Bay. The estate has been owned by the Myburgh family for eight generations, with a winemaking history stretching back to 1693. The Stellenbosch region provides a diverse terroir, including various soil types and a cooling maritime influence, which contributes to the wine's character. The 2020 vintage benefited from favorable winter rainfall followed by a moderate growing season, promoting balanced ripening.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The Meerlust Red 2020 is produced using a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. Each grape parcel is fermented separately, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels and foudré. The wine is aged in oak for a total of approximately 16 months, with a portion of new French oak, allowing the blend to harmonize. Green harvesting was utilized during the 2020 growing season to enhance fruit concentration and tannin ripeness.
