ABOUT THIS WINE
The Raats MR de Compostella 2017 is a red wine from Stellenbosch, South Africa, produced by Raats Family Wines. It is a Bordeaux-style blend, a collaborative project between winemakers Bruwer Raats and Mzokona Mvemve, aiming to create a wine where each varietal component can stand alone as a world-class expression. The grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch, grown on decomposed dolomite granite soils. The blend comprises Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, with the proportions varying annually based on barrel selection. Raats Family Wines was established in 2000 by Bruwer Raats, who has a focus on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. The MR de Compostella is a joint venture with Mzokona Mvemve, one of South Africa's first qualified black oenologists. The wine is recognized for its complexity and age-worthiness.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for the Raats MR de Compostella begins with hand-sorting the grapes three times. The fruit undergoes a five-day cold soak on the skins before fermentation at 28°C. After fermentation, the wine is basket pressed and undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 14 months in French 300-liter oak barrels, with some indications of 22 months in 33% new French oak for the MR de Compostella blend. The composition of the blend changes each vintage based on barrel selection.
