ABOUT THIS WINE
Founded in 1947, Caves da Murganheira initially focused on sparkling wines, bringing in expertise from Champagne. Over time, they developed a small, prestigious portfolio of still red wines, showcasing the unique potential of the Távora-Varosa region. This specific wine hails from the 2020 vintage, a year characterized by a severe continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. The vineyards are situated at high altitudes, between 500 and 810 meters, on granitic soils, contributing to the wine's structural elegance and mineral edge. The winemaking is led by Marta Lourenço, recognized as 'Winemaker of the Year 2025' by Grandes Escolhas. While neighboring Douro is known for schist-based reds, Murganheira's Távora-Varosa wines offer a distinct profile rooted in granite.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The 2020 Murganheira Reserva Tinto is crafted from 100% hand-picked and manually sorted grapes. Following complete destemming, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel lagares using gentle mechanical treading to extract color and tannins without bitterness. Malolactic fermentation is completed in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then aged for 24 months in fine French oak barrels, followed by an additional 10-12 months of bottle aging in the producer's underground blue granite caves before release.
