ABOUT THIS WINE
Periquita Reserva is a red wine from the Península de Setúbal region of Portugal, produced by José Maria da Fonseca. This wine holds historical significance as it represents the first red wine to be bottled in Portugal, with its origins tracing back to 1850. The estate itself was founded in 1834 by José Maria da Fonseca, and the wine is named after the founder's property, Cova da Periquita, where the Castelão grape, also known locally as Periquita, was first planted. The Península de Setúbal region, with its sandy soils and warm climate, provides an ideal environment for cultivating indigenous grape varietals, contributing to the distinct profile of this wine. The 2023 vintage benefited from favorable weather, leading to grapes with balanced ripeness and structure.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for Periquita Reserva begins with fermentation on the skins for about 7 days at a controlled temperature of 28°C, facilitating the extraction of essential compounds. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes an 8-month aging period in a mix of French and American oak barrels. This aging contributes to the wine's structure, complexity, and the integration of oak-derived nuances. The blend of Castelão, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca grapes is carefully managed to achieve the desired balance and character for the Reserva designation.
