ABOUT THIS WINE
Casa Castillo Pie Franco 2021 is a single-varietal Monastrell from the 'La Solana' vineyard in Jumilla, Spain. Planted in 1942 on sandy soils, the vines are ungrafted, a characteristic referred to as 'Pie Franco.' This vineyard, situated at 700-750 meters altitude, is the source of Bodegas Casa Castillo's flagship wine. The estate, re-established by the Vicente family in 1985, focuses on traditional varieties and minimal intervention to reflect the Jumilla terroir. The wine's uniqueness stems from its ancient, ungrafted vines and the specific sandy soil composition that has preserved them.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for Casa Castillo Pie Franco begins with destemmed grapes fermented using native yeasts in stone vats. Fermentation temperature is controlled around 26°C, with manual punching down of the cap. Malolactic fermentation takes place in contact with lees. The wine then undergoes aging for 16 to 22 months in 500-litre French oak demi-muids. The grapes are sourced from ungrafted, dry-farmed vines cultivated using certified organic practices.
