ABOUT THIS WINE
Weingut Michi Lorenz is located in the steep Sausal hills of Kitzeck im Sausal, South Styria, Austria, where the Lorenz family has farmed since 1524. Winemaker Michi Lorenz manages the estate with an artistic, biodynamic approach, famously comparing his winemaking to composing music. The playful name 'Schist Happens' refers to the challenging, steep slate and schist soils of the region. This narrative took a literal turn in August 2023 when severe rainstorms caused a landslide that washed away a portion of his top vineyard, embodying the raw, unpredictable power of nature that Michi embraces in his craft.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
This multi-vintage, solera-style Sauvignon Blanc is crafted from grapes hand-harvested across nine different high-altitude estate vineyards. The viticulture is certified biodynamic by Demeter. In the cellar, the grapes undergo two to four days of skin maceration to build texture. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts, with approximately 80% of the juice in stainless steel tanks and 20% in neutral oak barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months and blended using a solera system spanning up to four distinct vintages. It is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites.
