ABOUT THIS WINE
First introduced in 1985, Summus is the flagship Super Tuscan blend from the historic Castello Banfi estate, located on the southern hillsides of Montalcino. The name Summus, Latin for 'summit' or 'the highest,' reflects the winery's ambition to craft a world-class wine that marries the traditional soul of Tuscany with international character. Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Castello Banfi has been a pioneer in clonal research of the Sangiovese grape and is globally recognized for its commitment to environmental and social sustainability. The 2016 vintage in Tuscany is widely celebrated as an exceptional, highly balanced year, characterized by ideal diurnal temperature shifts that allowed for slow, perfect ripening of the grapes, resulting in outstanding structural complexity and longevity.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The winemaking process for Summus is highly precise, with each grape variety harvested and vinified entirely separately to respect their individual ripening timelines. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures between 25°C and 30°C in Castello Banfi's patented, state-of-the-art Horizon hybrid French oak and stainless-steel tanks, which optimize extraction and tannin management. Following fermentation, the wines are transferred to 350-liter French oak barriques for 12 months of individual aging. Once the final blend is assembled, the wine undergoes an additional 10 to 12 months of aging in a combination of barriques and large oak casks ranging from 60 to 90 hectoliters. After bottling, the wine is refined for another 6 to 12 months in the cellar before commercial release.
