ABOUT THIS WINE
Companhia de Vinhos dos Profetas e dos Villões was founded in 2021 by acclaimed winemaker António Maçanita and Nuno Faria. The project was born out of a desire to revive the historic, unfortified table wines of the Madeira archipelago. The name of the wine playfully references the historic rivalry between the islands: the inhabitants of the dry island of Porto Santo (the Prophets) historically referred to the residents of the main island of Madeira as 'Villões' (Villains). Sourced from old vines on volcanic soils, this wine represents a pioneering effort to showcase Tinta Negra as a serious, light-bodied, dry red wine.

WINE MAKING PROCESS
The grapes are hand-harvested from 40-year-old vines trained in traditional latadas (trellises) across the southern and northern coasts of Madeira. In the cellar, 70% of the fruit is destemmed while 30% is kept as whole clusters. Fermentation occurs spontaneously using only native yeasts, followed by an exceptionally long and gentle 40-day skin maceration to extract color and structure without harsh tannins. The wine is aged for 8 months, with 70% of the blend resting in neutral French oak barrels to build texture, and 30% in stainless steel tanks to preserve fresh primary fruit.
