ABOUT THIS WINE
Niepoort Vertente is a red wine from the Douro Demarcated Region (DOC) in Portugal, produced by Niepoort Vinhos. The wine is a blend of traditional Portuguese grape varieties, including Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Nacional, and Rufete. The grapes are sourced from old vines, typically aged between 30 to 80 years, located on the slopes of the Pinhão and Tedo rivers. The name 'Vertente' signifies 'aspect' or 'hillside,' referencing the diverse terroirs cultivated by Niepoort. The 2020 growing season was characterized by a rainy winter, a moderate spring, and a very hot July with heatwaves that impacted yields. Niepoort Vinhos, established in 1842, is a historic family-owned winery now led by the fifth generation. Initially focused on Port wine, the winery has become a pioneer in Douro still wines, emphasizing terroir, elegance, and freshness. The winery owns over eighty hectares of vineyards in the Douro, all farmed organically.
